History of the Math Club
After some minor discussion among other students, a then senior named Becky Kirvan set up the very first math club meeting On Thursday September 23, 2004. Eight students, now known as the "founding fathers" signed the club charter. Of the eight founding fathers, only Fred Iacoletti and David Williamson have not graduated yet (and they will do so in May 2008). In February 2005, the math club became officially recognized.
Becky coordinated numerous events for the math club, including a presentation by an Naval Researcher. Months later, Becky Kirvan graduated and the second math club president was sworn in, Tyler White. Tyler was a double major in both Math and Computer Science, and he was highly intelligent. Among the highlights of his presidency is that GMU President Alan Merten came to see a few computational research presentations, and the former Dean of the College of Arts and Science (now College of Science) Danelle Struppa presented on "Was Math Created or Invented." Also, then secretary Fred Iacoletti published the first Math Club Newsletter, one that has since evolved into a bimonthly semi-professional magazine.
After Tyler left for George Washington University, Ben Burnes became President. Ben was a highly charismatic and tact president, who very much reminds others of John Kennedy (another Massachusetts native). It was during his term that Fred Iacoletti recreated the math club website and the pilot episode of the Math Club Archives was filmed, produced, and released. In April 2007, Fred Iacoletti was unanimously elected president of the math club to replace Ben Burnes for the 2007-08 Academic Year, but he will have tough shoes to fill.
Like fellow Texas-Native George W Bush, President elect Fred Iacoletti is highly energetic and he rules with an enourmous fire. He and his "sidekick" David Williamson (the Treasurer) will work with Hanein Edrees, Dave Amarasinghe, and Brandon Schwartz to pull off the greatest year in the history of student organizations and hopefully win the coveted Student Organization of the Year Award in Spring 2008.
